Apple takes first place in the smartphone market in 2023 along with a record market share even though the overall market fell 3.2%, according to IDC Tracker

NEEDHAM, Massachusetts, January 15, 2024 – The last time a company not called Samsung was at the top of the smartphone market was in 2010, and by 2023 it is now Apple. A power shift of sorts at the top of the largest consumer electronics market was fueled by record market share for Apple and a first time at the top. Overall, the global smartphone market remains challenged, but momentum is moving quickly toward recovery. According to preliminary data from International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, global smartphone shipments declined 3.2% year-over-year to 1.17 billion units in 2023. While this marks the lowest annual volume in a decade, driven largely by macroeconomic challenges and high inventories at the beginning of the year, growth in the second half of the year has consolidated the expected recovery for 2024. The fourth quarter (4Q23) recorded year-on-year growth of 8.5% and 326.1 million shipments, higher than expected. of 7.3% growth.

“While we saw strong growth from low-end Android players like Transsion and Xiaomi in the second half of 2023, stemming from rapid growth in emerging markets, the biggest winner is clearly Apple,” said Nabila Popal, head of research. from IDC’s Worldwide Tracker. equipment. “Apple is not only the only player in the Top 3 to show positive growth annually, but it also holds the No. 1 spot annually for the first time. All of this despite facing increased regulatory challenges and renewed competition from Huawei in China, its largest market. “Apple’s continued success and resilience is largely due to the growing trend of premium devices, which now represent more than 20% of the market, driven by aggressive trade-in offers and interest-free financing plans” .

“The overall change in ranking at the top of the market further highlights the intensity of competition within the smartphone market,” said Ryan Reith, group vice president of Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers at IDC. “Apple certainly played a role in Samsung falling down the rankings, but the overall Android space is diversifying within itself. Huawei is back and making rapid inroads in China. Brands like OnePlus, Honor, Google and others are launching very competitive devices in the lower, high-end price range. And foldable devices and growing discussions about AI capabilities in smartphones are gaining traction. Overall, the smartphone space is headed towards a very interesting moment”.
